Material Properties and Coil Form
The X60 PSL2 pipeline coil is produced as a hot-rolled or controlled-rolled coiled strip, which is subsequently slit, formed, and welded into longitudinal seam pipes. Its key mechanical properties include a minimum yield strength of 415 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 520 MPa, with a maximum yield-to-tensile ratio of 0.93. The material also demonstrates excellent low-temperature toughness, typically requiring Charpy V-notch impact values of at least 40 J at 0°C or lower, depending on the design temperature. Weldability and Field Construction
Despite its higher strength, X60 PSL2 is engineered with moderate carbon (typically ≤0.12%) and carbon equivalent (CE ≤0.43), allowing conventional low-hydrogen welding processes such as gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) without extensive preheating. The coil format facilitates continuous pipe manufacturing in spiral or longitudinal seam mills, and the finished pipes are field-welded using automatic or semi-automatic techniques. Properly qualified welding procedures and post-weld NDE (radiography or ultrasonic) are essential to maintain the integrity of field girth welds.
Corrosion Resistance and Sour Service Options
For onshore lines that may encounter wet H₂S environments, X60 PSL2 coils can be ordered with additional requirements under ISO 15156 or NACE MR0175, such as HIC testing and sulfide stress corrosion cracking (SSCC) resistance. Although plain X60 is not inherently corrosion-resistant, protective coatings (e.g., fusion-bonded epoxy) and cathodic protection systems are routinely applied.
