ASTM A106 Grade C carbon steel tubing for industrial heat exchangers

ASTM A106 Grade C is a seamless carbon steel pipe specification intended for high-temperature service, making it a reliable choice for industrial heat exchangers. Unlike Grades A and B, Grade C offers the highest carbon content (up to 0.35%) and manganese content (0.29–1.06%), resulting in superior tensile strength—minimum 485 MPa (70,300 psi) and yield strength of 275 MPa (39,900 psi). These mechanical properties allow the tubing to withstand elevated pressures and temperatures typical in heat transfer applications, such as in refineries, power plants, and process chemical units.

In heat exchanger service, the tubing must endure cyclic thermal stresses and potential corrosion from process fluids. Grade C’s enhanced strength enables thinner wall sections compared to lower grades, improving thermal efficiency while maintaining structural integrity. However, its higher carbon equivalent demands careful welding practices—preheating and post-weld heat treatment are often required to prevent hydrogen-induced cracking. Additionally, its performance in sour or oxidizing environments is limited; for such cases, alloy steels or stainless steels may be preferred.

When specified with proper corrosion allowances and manufacturing standards (e.g., NACE for sour service), ASTM A106 Grade C tubes deliver cost-effective, durable operation. Their seamless nature eliminates weld seams, reducing leak risks in critical heat exchanger bundles. For non-corrosive, high-temperature applications requiring robust mechanical performance, this grade remains an industry staple. Proper adherence to ASME Section II and heat treatment protocols ensures longevity and safety in demanding heat transfer systems.
